The Tallahassee Community Chorus is a non-auditioned group
that draws members of all musical abilities from all walks
of life in the Big Bend community, including professional
musicians who want to sing with Dr. André Thomas, our
Artistic Director. Dr. Thomas’s musical genius is in demand
throughout the world.
The Tallahassee Community Chorus recently participated in
the Beijing International Choral Festival and
performed
in Carnegie Hall in 2004.
The Tallahassee Community Chorus was formally
organized in the spring of 1988.
Representatives from
the Tallahassee community met with
Robert Glidden, Dean of the College of Music at Florida
State, to gain support for a new choral organization. As
part of Dean Glidden's vision of a community chorus, FSU
provided the artistic director,
an assistant conductor, and
an accompanist from the
College of Music.
Our repertoire comprises large
masterworks with orchestra. Recent performances included
works by Handel, Fauré, Lauridsen, Penderecki, Honneger,
Haydn,
Mahler, and Beethoven. A dynamic and mature musical
organization, the Chorus has performed with and under the
direction of such well-known musicians as Billy Taylor,
Bobby McFerrin, Krzystof Pendercki, Sir David Willcocks, and
the late Robert Shaw. The chorus also performs gospel
songs, spirituals, and other music,
some
pieces composed or
arranged by Dr. Thomas.
In addition to
the fall and spring concerts, the Tallahassee Community
Chorus sponsors a concert each January celebrating community
unity. The Tallahassee Community Chorus has performed with
the Tallahassee Symphony, the Florida State University
Choral Department, the Florida A&M Choral Department, as
well as many groups from local schools and churches.
